Meet Frances Yarbrough
Last week one of our newest members told us about herself.
Frances was born and raised in Red Deer to a volunteering family. She took this to heart and has been volunteering since. After a BSc in Zoology from U of A she worked in northern BC studying ptarmigan. This was followed by work in U of A limnology labs studying local lakes. A recession affected Frances like many people. Showing her character, she went back to school, a process she did more than once leading her on a career journey that included teaching, volunteering, and social work. She worked in Slave Lake, Brandon and Winnipeg Manitoba. Frances worked and volunteered for The Red Cross. This lead to assignments in New York a few months post 9/11, Okanagan firestorm, and recovery from hurricane Katrina and weathering hurricane Rita in Louisiana. Her Masters in Social Work lead to work in an Orillia ON hospice and independent consulting. Five years of work in North Simcoe Victims Services prepared her for her current role in the County of Strathcona Victims Services. This works well for her because her parents still live in Red Deer and she wants to be close to them again.
Whew! A very busy person and she wants to volunteer with the Rotary Club of Sherwood Park. Maybe she can infuse us with the energy she has. Next time we have a Zoom meeting, be sure to say hello to Frances.
Rotary Rides for You Can Ride 2
At the request of the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove here is another activity to support the community.
On Saturday, August 8, 2020, the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove is hosting Rotary Rides for You Can Ride 2, a motorcycle ride and poker run in support of You Can Ride 2, a program that loans adapted bikes to children with special needs.
The event begins in Spruce Grove, ends in Edmonton, and has a leisurely 250 km tour in between. All the details about the event and the cause, including registration and volunteer links, can be found at https://sprucegroverotary.org/page/rotary-ride.
Right now, we are opening this event to only Rotarians and their friends and families as well as families and friends of the You Can Ride 2 program. There are limited registrations available! We are only taking 60 riders in this inaugural year, so act fast! If you're a Rotarian who doesn't ride, and you live in or west of Edmonton, please consider coming out to spectate or volunteer!
The need is great even in our community so at a recent board meeting we voted to contribute $500 to the Food Bank. Our original plan was to conduct a food drive. We were going to ask individual Rotarians to help out donating and gathering needed food. That becomes risky in this environment hence the donation of money. As individuals you can still help out by purchasing Sobeys/Safeway gift cards from Erin Stephen then drop them off or mail them to the Food Bank. This helps out our Interact Club and the Food Bank. Information on how to contact Erin follows:
Rotarians can send Erin a text. 780-235-7465 Etransfer to erin.stephen@pwc.com It doesn’t require a password. She will arrange a convenient "contactless" drop off.
The address of the Strathcona Food Bank is:

Oktoberfest is still happening but perhaps a little later into the fall. The German Cultural Society still wants our help and participation.
Meal Packaging Event January 2021. Following the success this year OLPH Church will be the location again.
